Ingredients:
For the Salisbury Steak:
- 1 pound ground beef (you can also use ground pork or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy:
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 small onion, sliced
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well combined.
- Form the Steaks: Divide the meat mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties, similar to traditional steaks. You can make them as thick or as thin as you prefer.
- Cook the Steaks: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little oil. Once hot, carefully place the steak patties in the skillet. Cook them for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside.
- Prepare the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and cook until softened and golden brown. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1-2 minutes to make a roux.
- Add the Beef Broth: Gradually pour the beef broth into the skillet, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve: Once the gravy is ready, return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet, coating them with the gravy. Allow them to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to heat through.
- Enjoy: Serve the Poor Man’s Steak hot, accompanied by mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side dishes. Spoon extra gravy over the steaks and enjoy this comforting and budget-friendly meal!
